John Francis Noll (1875-1956) was bishop (and later archbishop) of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Fort Wayne, Indiana from 1925 until his death; he was also the founder of the "Our Sunday Visitor" newspaper. He wrote in his Introduction to this 1946 book, "The course of instructions contained in this book---in dialogue form---are intended both for Catholics, who were deprived, during their youth, of a training in the science of God, and for non-Catholics who are interested in learning what the Catholic Church teaches officially concerning religious doctrine and practices... An inquiry into the claims of the Catholic Church, such as you are about to make, results in the conversion of nearly 100,000 citizens of the United States every year, or approximately 250 every day... the Catholic Church grows faster than all other churches combined... Your instructor will probably question you from the Baltimore Catechism, but if you master this book... you will be able, in your own words, to answer practically all questions contained in that Catechism."
"Father Smith" says about anti-Catholic literature, "it emanates either from professed enemies of the Catholic Church, or from men and women who find it financially profitable, on occasion, to attack the Catholic Church. Some years ago many self-styled ex-priests and ex-nuns toured parts of the country where Catholics are few. For instance, Maria Monk, Margaret Shepherd, Helen Jackson and Mabel McClish were never nuns, but rather had been wayward girls detained in reform schools conducted by Sisters, and who, when they were released, saw a chance to make a living by writing for and lecturing to that element which would believe any lie about the Catholic Church." (Pg. 3)
He states, "We do not believe that the soul of a child, who dies without the grace of God because unbaptized, will be consigned to positive punishment and suffering. In fact, we believe that it enjoys a happiness which far exceeds any natural happiness here---but it can only be a NATURAL happiness, or a kind that fits the soul's capacity. Of course, it falls far short of the happiness enjoyed by those who see God. If the soul was never elevated by grace to the supernatural condition, it cannot inherit supernatural happiness." (Pg. 15-16)
At the end of a lesson, "Mr. Jackson" declares, "if I were a member of no church, and wanted to know the truth, none but an infallible Church would have any attraction for me, for how else would I be sure that the Church would not mislead me? Not to claim infallibility would be equivalent to an admission that the Church might teach me wrong." (Pg. 50)
Fr. Smith argues, "at heart every Christian believes in Purgatory, no matter how vehemently he might denounce it by word. This is evident from the prayers he says almost unconsciously, for his deceased friends and relatives. There is scarcely a Christian funeral without prayer; it is a case of actions speaking louder than words---for if there be no Purgatory, of what avail is prayer? If the soul of the deceased be in Heaven, it needs no prayer; if it be in Hell, prayer cannot help it." (Pg. 69)
In response to Jackson's question as to whether the Mass might one day be said in English, Fr. Smith replies, "It would be possible, but this is not likely to happen (1) because there is no need for it, since the priest does not say Mass to the people, but to God... and (2) because it is so fitting that the Church, which is international, should have a language of its own." (Pg. 168)
That this book---despite that it sounds quite “genteel” to most modern ears---remains in print after nearly 70 years since it was written, is testimony to the timeless clarity of its expositions and explanations.

Well written, easy to understand. Makes learning about the reasons behind the different aspects of the Catholic religion well worth the read.
It is written in the form of a conversation between Mr. Jackson and Father Smith. It is an easy to understand way of getting to know what the Catholic Church teaches. The language is of an little older style which I think makes it more of a joy to read.
This book takes all the guesswork out of being a Catholic or just being curious about Catholicism. You can read front to back, look for specific Q&A or browse at your leisure. It's clear and concise and quite conversational as Fr. Smith talks to Chris Jackson at length about our beloved Church. As a lifelong Catholic I found it quite refreshing and informative and bought eight books to give to family and friends.
